God and Man at Liberty University
Well, it has now become apparent that leftist rot has even penetrated into the “Harvard of the Right,” Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University. In the brouhaha that followed the University’s derecognition of the campus Democrat club, an undercover leftist, Kevin Roose, who spent a semester at the university and wrote a book about it, has revealed that:
“I learned that Liberty is a much more diverse place than people give it credit for, and that speaking about the Liberty Young Democrats as if they were bizarre outliers… ignores the fact that Liberty students, like many other young evangelicals across the nation, are rethinking what it means to be a Christian in the 21st century… When I arrived at Liberty for my semester “abroad,” I expected to find a campus full of ballot-punching Republicans. I found those, but I also met Christian feminists, Christian civil libertarians, Christians opposed to the war in Iraq, Christian gay-rights activists, and other Liberty students who challenged the norms of their parents’ generation.”
Isn’t this wonderful? Now, the same type of progressive, enlightened, students who populate the thousands of government institutions of higher education which are supported by the taxes paid by their parents’ generation can now attend private institutions at their parent’s expense, where they can trash their parents’ values without spending a nickle of Uncle Sam’s money, which apparently has been all paid to GM. It will be very exciting to learn that when these bright young harbingers of hope give birth to their children, and when they are paying for their children’s education, their children will be supporting the rights of menage-a-trois’ers, and the rights of men and women to marry ducks, and maybe their brothers and sisters. All in the name of Jesus. Hallelujah!
But all is not as rosy as it seems. It appears there is a right-wing reign of terror at Liberty University. The aforesaid Mr. Roose reports that:
“A few days ago, I got an e-mail from a longtime Liberty professor who confessed that he’d voted for President Obama last fall, and told me that due to the “the dictatorial atmosphere” at Liberty, he could lose his job if anyone discovered his secret. Since my book came out, I’ve heard similar stories from former and current Liberty students, alumni, and faculty members, many of whom share that professor’s worry.”
But this is not entirely bad. Liberals love equality, don’t they? Now, they can learn what it’s like to be a conservative professor on a liberal campus. They can be treated equally with their conservative compadres. They can learn what it’s like to be routinely called names like “bigot.” To be threatened with “hate crimes” prosecutions. To be sneered at if you point out how flawed is the evidence for global warming or Darwinism. To be denied appointments and promotions because of race and gender. So quit crying, underground leftist professors at Liberty U! All this is going to build your character.
